Care of pet Reptiles

Husbandry and environment are the most important factors in reptile health Most common clinical diseases in reptiles are bacterial infections secondary to poor husbandry 

Common Reptile Pets seen include

Lizards:

  • Iguanids, Agamids, Geckos, Chameleons, Tegus, and Monitors

Snakes: 

  • Pythons: Ball, Burmese, Green Tree
  • Boas: Common, Rosy, Rainbow, Redtail
  • Colubrids: Corn snakes, Kingsnakes

Chelonians: turtles and tortoises:

  • Box, Sliders, Yellowfoot

Lizards:

  • Iguanas: Green, Anoles, Collard lizards, Fence lizards, Horned lizards
  • Agamids: Bearded dragons, agamas
  • Geckos: Leopard, House, Day, Tokay
  • Chameleons: “montane” and “lowland”
  • Tegus and Monitors: B+W, Savannah 

Management

Try to keep to as natural an environment for the species as possible, so factors to consider are:

  • diet / treats fed (include supplements)
  • housing, substrate
  • humidity
  • Light- whether to use UV lights, lights as heat sourcesprovision of drinking water temperature- need basal temperature (with variation for day and night) and hot-spot temperatures, use a thermometer placed at your pets head level to measure this.
